According to Google Trends, the world apparently cares the the new search engine, Cuil, launched today. I had a few spare minutes today and took it for test drive.
Initially, two things came to mind. First, since Cuil was started by a pack of angry former Google employees, they might just know what they’re doing. After all, they did work for Google and probably learned a few things about building a great product. Second, I thought about how, for any search engine to compete with the big boys, they really need to make a big improvement or at least make the search experience more interesting than it is today.
So I went to Cuil and searched for one of my favorite things in the world, Family Guy fan website. Here’s what I got:
I’m not smart enough to build a search engine. And I’m certainly not ambitious enough to try. But if I did, I try to do a better job at making my first impression.
Honestly, I did get a search to work earlier in the day and was surprised by how good the results seemed to be, at a glance. The overall display is a little strange. Cuil displays about 12 results per page and results include about 100 characters of text from each page. I think this is cool cause it can save you a lot fo time if you know what your looking for.
Anyways, once the folks at Cuil get their stuff together, I’ll post some more.
